"The Brain Game"
as told by Chubster Chow Chow

"Hi, I'm Chubster Chow Chow. Okay, it's true. Dogs get bored easily! Boredom is really frustrating, too, and that's why we chew up your furniture. Sorry! You can help us not be bored, and the best thing is, it really doesn't take much effort on your part."

"In this game, which I call the Brain Game, you're going tempt me out of boredom with treats. Hey, they don't call me Chubster the Chow for nothing, heh heh."

HERE'S HOW THE GAME WORKS

"Get a pet-safe bone from the pet store. Make sure it has a hollow center. Now, put something in that hollow part. I'm suggesting doggie treats, pieces of hot dog, maybe peanut butter (or, better for my health, almond butter) or cheese."

"Now, give it to me when you go away. Okay...once I have that bone, I'm going to HAVE to figure out how to get those good treats OUT. Oh boy, gotta gotta GOT TO have those treats. Workin' workin' WORKIN' to get them out. My, look at the clock. I've been on this mission for awhile, now...and I'm all tired out. Better take a nap (and dream about more treats in the bone, more treat-getting tactics; yeah, I can SOLVE THIS MYSTERY.)"

"You know, of course, that bone won't entertain me forever. So, get me some of those educational toys from the pet store. You know, the ones that have cavities for hiding treats. I'll do almost anything for food!"

Macie says...

Dogs are den animals. One of the best gifts you can give your dog is his very own den, such as a dog crate, to be treated as your dog's "safe place".

With his own den and plenty of toys to keep him occupied in your absence, your dog should be able to adapt to your absences. Try to limit your dog's crate time to no more than four hours at a stretch.
