"Let's Go Hunting!"
as told by Lakota Wolfdog
"Hi, I'm Lakota Wolfdog. Did you know
that all dogs are bred to do a job? Some hunt, others guard, and so
on. As for me, I'll chase anything that moves...like the cat next
door, hee hee."
"It's not that I'm
being a bad dog; it's a natural instinct that all dogs have, it's
called a prey drive. Yeah, that's right, a prey drive.
I need to stalk something, chase it, and then take it
down."
"What I
take down is pretty much up to YOU. It can be the cat, or my
ball...or the mail man. It's ALL UP TO YOU."
HERE'S HOW THE GAME
WORKS
"Take my favorite toy, and tie it to
the end of a rope. Now, throw the toy. As we both know, I will chase
it. When I almost get to it, pop the rope, keeping it moving. That
will really challenge me."
Every now and then you have to let me catch it.
(NO-o, this isn't torture the dog hour) and let me
bring it to you. When I bring it to you, you must do that GOOD
GIRL and scratch-behind-my-ears thing."
"Wow, I actually feel like I'm hunting something and
catching it for you. This makes me a very happy dog, and the mail
man is a little less important, 'cause I get to stalk something
other than HIM!"

Macie says...Did you know that
a lot of dogs bite their owners and other people just
because they're bored? They need to chase something and
knock it down.
These same dogs are great as guard dogs. They tend to get
into trouble as pets unless they can exercise their prey
drive safely!
