"Scent
Trails"
as told by Lakota Wolfdog
"Hi, I'm Lakota Wolfdog. You
know, when you teach your dog to use his nose on command, you're
allowing him to work for you, which makes him very happy. The
more time he spends working for you, the less time he'll have to
find and bring in those other treats, like dead frogs, mice and
lizards."
HERE'S HOW THE GAME
WORKS
"The game of Scent Trails builds on
the game of Find It. Take a treat (preferably cheese or a hot dog)
and rub it on the floor, slowly sliding it across the floor and
around a corner. Keep the distance short at first. Make sure you
leave the treat at the end of the trail."
"Now lead me to the beginning of the
trail, and keep your finger and my nose close to the floor near
the scent trail. Guide my nose until I pick up the scent, and
then say GOOD GIRL, FIND IT, GOOD GIRL, FIND IT."
"Don't forget to show lots of
excitement and scratch me behind the ears when I find and get
the treat! The happier you are, the harder I'll work for you.
Dogs are proud when you're pleased with them. Can you think of
other things you might want me to play Scent Trails with? Why, I
could be a regular search-and-rescue hound!!!"

Macie says...There was a time
when a family only owned a dog if the dog worked. The dog
had to earn his keep. Nothing in life was free.
Although times have changed, dogs still want to work for
their owners. A dog's proudest moments are those when he is
working for his master. It can be any kind of work:
obedience commands, tricks, or bringing the newspaper.
